I love impromptu tennis
I love the flexibility of pickup tennis and in the last 2 weeks I've met by accident and played with two strangers at the brand new, tennis backboard in Scoville Park.  Great fun.
I'm out tonight
Brothers, I'm out tonight, as I had mentioned last week. I'm in New Orleans with Felice. Wonderful, special Bat Mitzvah. And really, really enjoyed Jazz Fest which we kept running into. It uplifted my soul. Barry, Loving Leopard

People really, really want a positive change.
People really, really want a positive change.  Remember this the Obama promise and the celebration and anticipation in November 2008 when he won his first term of President.
Manhattan is a wonderfully walkable, energy-efficient place

Walkable, dense, intense, spectacular, and most likely, sustainable.

Video - Yes, Downtown Merchants in Rockford Do Help Each Other
Yes, the downtown merchants do help each other.  And that helped me when I ate lunch at Deli Italia yesterday.  My friend had asked our waitress Stephanie for a specific coffee and she told us that she could serve us regular coffee, but we could get good coffee and lots of choices a block away at a neighboring coffee shop.  It was to heartening to hear and I asked her about it. If you haven't already heard Stephanie say it herself, check out the video clip above.
Video - Larry, Rockford's "Iceman"
I met Larry when I had lunch at Deli Italia.  He is a charming, interesting man who has lots of stories about everything related to ice.  He's 65 and delivers ice to this restaurant and McDonald's, Walgreens, or wherever in the area an ice machine breaks and they need ice right away.  He gets it to them within two hours.
Ordinary people ridding us of the drug problem in Rockford?
Yesterday I was talking with someone who's lived and worked in Rockford for a  long time. When I asked how things were in Rockford, one of the things she mentioned was that heroin is rampant in Rockford.  She mentioned three people she knew who died recently, two of overdoses.  I asked why heroin was so rampant.  She said that kids are texting all the time, they’re bored, and adults with money give their kids money and leave them on their own.

What's your bottom line? Mine is happiness.
Happiness is one of my highest values.  And just saw an article listing ten things science taught us about happiness this past year.  Here are three of my favorites:Happiness is about respect, not riches.Kindness is its own reward--even to toddlers, andGratitude sustains relationships through tough timesAnd here's a link to the full article: http://truth-out.org/news/item/13870-ten-things-science-taught-us-about-happiness-in-2012What's your bottom line?
Can we further support zero-waste in Oak Park?
Are Oak Parker's interested in zero-waste?  My guess is yes. So here's a snippet from an article about how it has taken grassroots recyclers have won legal and financial support and organized in cooperatives in Buenos Aires:
Why use this bulletin board?
It's kind of like Facebook and kind of like Craigslist - so why would someone want to use this site rather than the others? The main purpose of this site is to provide a tool for people to connect with one another around ordinary, day-to-day needs as well as to deal with issues of larger importance. Whether it's something needed in the home environment or an issue of work, raising kids, healthcare, etc., I believe our best shot at solving these problems is for people in local villages to talk with one another and help one another.
Images - Oak Parker's film at NYC Film Festival
Felice and I went to NYC for the showing of her first film, THE CALL.  My role - professional by-stander.  Though we didn't win ‘best of the fest,’ people loved the film.  The story starts slowly, mysteriously, with an expressive 11-year-old boy nagging his older sister at the edge of the ocean.  It's a skillfully crafted, beautiful film with an emotional wallop.  To order a copy as a DVD or instant download, visit the website: www.thecallmovie.org/DVD.
How would you rate the apartment or house that you're renting in Oak Park?
Is it comfortable?  Noisy?  Quiet?  How's the landlord?  Are there any challenges?  Would you recommend it to a friend?
A story about our country for my 4-year old grandson
Reading to Jacob
When your Daddy was about your age, our country had a leader who was good to people (Jimmy Carter).  A man who wanted to take his place (Ronald Reagan) did a bad thing (Iran-Contra) and tricked people into making him the new leader.  In the years that passed, a small group of people became very rich and powerful.  And many people suffered when they lost their homes or their work or their health.  The newspapers and televisions explained that all of this is as it should be.  People became afraid.
If google gives answers to anything you ask, why aren't things better in our village?

I love living here in Oak Park amongst large, beautiful trees and stimulating, active people.  It's a place with stories about Frank Lloyd Wright, Hemingway, and purposeful diversity, local artists.  And there are  loads of wonderful, moderately-priced restaurants.  What do you like most about Oak Park? October 2005 021.jpg

Can We Thrive without Dollar Bills ?
Let’s say that a dozen of us knew each other, and ranged in age from a baby to that of an elder.  And also for the moment, let’s say that we somehow knew that a year from now we would have no US currency or credit. Could we survive or even thrive?  My answer would be yes.  We could figure out a way if we had hope and a determination to survive.   Here are my first thoughts about how we could live without U.S. dollar bills.
Is there Blessed Unrest in Your Village?
There were maybe 2 million organizations world-wide in 2007 that were dealing with ecological sustainability and social justice (according to Paul Hawken in Blessed Unrest).  My guess is this number has gone up (with all of the protests in the Middle East, the US, and elsewhere).
