Residential Bathroom Remodeling Contractors BATHROOM REMODELING Featured Bathroom Remodeling Articles Bathroom Contractors Take The Plunge Jennifer Weldon You have decided to give that old bathroom the flush and you want a fabulous new one. And, you want it to be more efficient and eco-friendly than the old one. Now is the time to get a call into your bathroom-remodeling contractor and let him help you with the new design. Flooring Let's work from the bottom up and start with the flooring for your new bathroom. The logical green choice is either natural stone or porcelain tile. Unlike vinyl flooring or carpeting (a poor choice for bathrooms) stone and tile are natural products and can be recycled. They are easy to maintain and will probably outlast the home if properly installed. If you go with natural stone the choices are somewhat limited compared to tile. The colors are usually earth tones and the patterns were shaped by nature. There will be some variation in the grain/pattern and colors, especially if the stone tiles were cut from more than a single stone. Depending on the type of stone you choose you will need to treat it occasionally with a sealer. Stone can be discolored by stains if not properly sealed. Porcelain tile is manufactured from clay and is mixed with adhesive agents and baked to create the tile. The clay mixture can be tinted to provide the desired and color and the pattern is set by a mold. Don't confuse ceramic tile with porcelain tile. They are both manufactured however, ceramic tile is only colored on the surface and then covered with a hard glaze. The actual tile is white under the color covering. You can tell this by looking at the back of a tile. Porcelain is colored throughout and if chipped is likely to show the defect. Plumbing Fixtures By federal regulation all plumbing fixtures must incorporate water saving features. Some toilet designs for low-volume water flushing are more efficient. The larger the hole between the water tank and the bowl the faster the volume can flow when released. This makes for less clogging and multiple flushes. Cabinets resources. If you go with a pedestal type sink make certain the sink and pedestal are both made of porcelain so they can be recycled. Some plastics maybe recyclable but not all. So it is a safe bet with porcelain. Lighting Go with all energy saving fixtures and bulbs. There are styles to fit every dcor and can reduce your electrical usage by as much as fifty percent. Walls If you have the walls painted use an egg-shell or semi-gloss latex based paint with low or no volatile organic compounds. The other choice of course to use stone or tile which will last for years without any major maintenance. Bathroom remodeling involves handling plumbing, electrical and perhaps structural elements that may require the experience and skills of a professional bathroom remodeling contractor. Before you find out you're in over your head, call a local bathroom remodeler and get an estimate for the project. It doesn't cost a penny to get an estimate and you may be surprised how affordable the remodel can be. |

Bathroom Installation | Install Bathroom Bathroom Installation: Know Your Options Before You Start The Work! See if We Have Top-Rated Bathroom Contractors in Your Area Remodeling your bathroom is one of the best investments you can make when it comes to home improvement. Furthermore, because it's one of the most popular projects for homeowners to undertake, an entire industry has risen up to cater to bathroom installation projects . Before you get your bathroom installation underway, here are a few ideas you might want to work into your plan. Why Settle For Less? Upgrade Your Fixtures If you're thinking about a bathroom remodel, why not shoot for the stars and upgrade your fixtures for starters? Replace that old tub with a larger, jetted model. Get rid of the tiny stool and put in a more comfortable, sleeker designed toilet. Get a custom showerhead for the shower and designer faucets for the sinks. The only two factors limiting your possibilities are space and budget. Besides that, the sky is the limit. Save Money and Help the Environment When you're shopping for new fixtures, keep an eye out for environmentally friendly products. Water saving shower heads and double flush toilets don't cost that much more than standard models, and the money you'll save over time means these products more than pay for themselves. Add to that the facts that their styling is at least as striking as less efficient models, and that they function just as well, and there really isn't a reason not to think green when you shop for your new bathroom installation. Creature Comforts Don't End With New Fixtures Besides fixtures, there are a number of other additions you can make as part of your remodel that will help to transform your current bathroom into one of your favorite rooms in the house. Heated towel racks ensure that every time you get out of the shower you'll have a cozy, warm towel at your fingertips. Electric heating strips can be installed beneath your new tile to keep it warm and toasty on cold days. And there are even mirror defogging units that can be installed onto the backs of your mirrors so they're clear and ready for you when you get out of the shower. Talk to a bathroom remodeler or a retailer of bathroom products to get a better idea of the full range of options available to you. Don't live with less! Use this link and hire a local to Install Bathroom Make the Most of Your Space Finally, as you begin your bathroom installation always think how you can best utilize the space you have. Install vanities with drawers and cabinets big enough to hold your toiletries, extra towels and other bathroom necessities. Doing so will go a long ways towards keeping your bathroom clean and uncluttered. Also, think about installing an extra cabinet over the toilet to hold toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and other odds and ends that take up valuable space elsewhere. Talk to the Pro's Maybe the most important thing to do before you start your project is to talk to the pros. A bathroom installation involves a wider variety of projects than any other room in the home. Plumbers, electricians, tile installers, cabinetry installers and painters will all have something to offer you, both in the form of services and by offering you helpful suggestions along the way. There are even professionals out there who specialize in bathroom design and installation that are excellent resources from the planning stages on. Talk to the appropriate professionals about what you need to do to get your bathroom installation underway. Matt Goering, formerly a carpenter and house painter, is a freelance writer for the home improvement industry who has published over 600 articles. We're growing! So we'd like to know your favorite... ...and more ! |

Best Bathtubs: Picking the Best Bathtub the best reviews their picks what to buy Best Bathtub The bathtub market encompasses a wide range of shapes, sizes, colors, styles and construction materials. Cost varies widely as well. A new bathtub can be had for as little as $200 or for more than $5,000. But that doesn't include the cost of the tub's installation, which can add $2,000 to $3,500 to the bill. And if you're renovating an existing bathroom, the price tag can run even higher if you choose to relocate plumbing fixtures. Knowing this, it's easy to see why it's important to do your homework when choosing the best bathtub for your home. For people renovating a bathroom, many will find their bathtub choices are limited from the get-go -- walls may dictate similar style and size as the old tub, usually 5 to 6 feet long (interior and exterior, respectively) by 30 to 36 inches deep. For most people, that may mean a recessed tub (enclosed by three walls), a corner tub (walls on two sides) or a drop-in tub contained in a frame and perhaps hugging just one wall. If the home is old, the existing bathtub may be free-standing, such as a clawfoot tub. Those remain popular today, but there are also modern-style freestanding bathtubs, some of which sit atop a platform. Soaking tubs -- also called Japanese, Asian or Greek tubs -- are usually shorter and deeper than conventional tubs and well suited to persons who enjoy immersing themselves. If you have frequent muscle or joint pain, or just enjoy the luxury of a spa, you may want to consider a whirlpool tub, and those come in as many shapes and sizes as standard tubs. If you have mobility problems, a walk-in tub may be your answer. All of the aforementioned bathtub types are constructed with a variety of materials: Acrylic, fiberglass, enamel-coated steel or cast iron are the most common, but bathtubs are also made from copper, stone and composite materials and wood. Of course, you may not need a new tub at all -- most conventional tubs can be refinished, or an acrylic tub liner can be installed over the old tub surface. Both are usually jobs for professionals, but they are much cheaper options than a new tub. Types of Bathtubs © 2011. ConsumerSearch, Inc. How to install basement bathroom - Friendly Plumber - select - -Care & Cleaning -Decorating & Remodeling -Dishwasher -Emergency Preparedness -Energy Efficiency -Faucet -Garbage Disposer - select - -Pipe -Septic System -Sink & Drain -Toilet -Washing Machine & Dryer -Water Conservation -Water Heater -Misc. <p/> If you're remodeling the basement of your home and thinking about adding a new bathroom or powder room, that's a smart move. According to Remodel Magazine's "2005 Cost vs. Value" report, homeowners can recoup more than 86 percent of the cost of a bathroom addition. "But conventional plumbing can be costly. And the digging is a real mess. So how can you increase your property value, while maximizing your remodeling investment? A quick and economical Saniflo bathroom installation is the answer. You'll have a sleek new bath in just half a day, without the high cost and hassle of conventional plumbing and digging. Saniflo "macerating" technology makes it possible to install a powder room or bathroom anywhere you want, including in an unfinished basement. Excavation isn't needed because the above-ground plumbing system is installed directly atop the finished floor. Saniflo systems can even be installed below the sewage line. A Saniflo toilet looks very much like a conventional toilet, taking up roughly the same amount of floor space. But instead of routing the flush water through a drain in the floor, the macerating system moves it to a special pump box, usually located on the floor between the toilet and the wall. The macerating unit can also be concealed behind the wall. The unit uses a fast-rotating blade to reduce waste and toilet paper in the flush water, which is immediately and entirely released under pressure through small-diameter piping to the sewer or septic tank. No special maintenance is needed and the pump is sealed for life. This simple and cost-effective alternative to conventional plumbing is ideal for basement renovations and other home-improvement projects. Properly sized, a Saniflo macerating system can handle all the fixtures in a bathroom, including the sink, shower, tub and toilet &endash; even on a septic system. What's more, these fixtures will work up to 12 feet below and as far as 150 feet away from a septic tank or sewer line. Macerating systems are changing the way homeowners remodel and helping them maximize their investments. For more information about Saniflo, the only company that makes a macerating toilet system, call toll-free (800) 571-8191 or visit www.saniflo.com. |

How to Find an Architect | eHow.com How to Find an Architect Instructions Ask for recommendations from your friends who have had houses built for them. Ask a lot of questions, such as was the architect easy to work with, was the project completed in the time frame quoted, were there any hidden costs, and others. Tour the friends' houses that have recommended architects, and look for the quality of the design, and whether the design might suit your needs. Go to the building supply stores and ask for architect recommendations. Ask the same questions regarding the recommended architect's work. Ask your friends or relations who are builders or in the construction field for architect recommendations. These recommendations will be the most valuable because the people who take the two-dimensional design and translate into a three-dimensional reality have insight into the architect's ability, such as the practicality of the design, that non-building professionals would not. Make a list of architects from the recommendations you received, go to the American Institute of Architects website, and click on the "Find an Architect" link. Enter in the architects' name to see if they appear. Since the AIA has been around since 1857, and has a strict code of ethics to which its members must adhere, this would be a good way to pre-screen your prospective architect. Interview the architects from your list who are listed with the AIA. Make certain you ask the architect a lot of questions. The AIA website provides a list of twenty questions, including: "How will the architect approach your project?", "How will the architect gather information about your needs, goals, etc.?", "What sets this architect apart from the rest?", "How does the architect establish fees?", "What would the architect expect the fee to be for this project?" and more. Inspect and verify the architect's license and credentials. Request a list of projects that the architect designed and go visit them for yourself. Finding the right architect is important, for it is that person in whom you are relying to design your dream home. Comments on 1/27/2010 It is a common misconception that A.I.A. membership includes some sort of quality screening. Actually any person willing to pay the membership fee is able to be a member of the A.I.A., including non-architects. There are several other social institutions for architects (god help us) including the Society of American Registered Architects (S.A.R.A.) and the Association of Licensed Architects (A.L.A.). Membership in any of these organizations does not guarantee how well one will perform on a specific project or how they will interact with you. Also, I'm not sure asking somebody from a building supply store will turn up useful information. Would you ask a pharmacist to recommend a doctor? I would talk to your friends about their experiences with architects. If your friends have bad experiences or no experience, call some local architects. Chances are that they have a website b... on 10/12/2009 This list has some very insightful methods for finding an architect (including the link on the side of the page for finding the right architect), but I have to disagree with your tip that an architect must be a member of the AIA. I used to be a member of the AIA, but I could no longer justify spending $600 a year on membership fees. The AIA is simply a club that a person can buy into, and for $600+ a year a lot of architects (especially in this economy) are having a difficult time trying to afford it. Finding the right architect definitely takes time talking to friends and researching online, and selecting one involves a great leap of faith. You'll know if you have the right one after a five minute conversation with that person. 20 Questions to Ask Your Architect | ||
