<p>» Sightseeing AIA Chicago Quarterly Calendar now online Since 1997, archi-treasures has created community-driven projects in neighborhoods across Chicago. This workshop, led by archi-treasures executive director Joyce Fernandes and Jeff Bone, AIA (Landon Bone Baker), will introduce participants to archi-treasures’ methodology of participatory design and share some of the amazing results of this process. Join fellow small project practitioners, both seasoned and novice, as we gather for a convivial evening of wine sipping, lively conversation, discussions about the state of the profession, permitting in Chicago, and a preview/discussion of future programs aimed at issues facing the smaller office. All are encouraged to join for a beneficial exchange of ideas, food and fun. Thanks to NanaWall for supporting this event. We are back at Theory for fabulous drinks and even better networking opportunities. Bring your business cards, a good joke to break the ice, and be ready to meet some interesting people. Specials include $7 tacos, $5 margaritas, $4 selected draft beer. Visit our Meetup page to let us know you'll be there. Mike Infringer of Terra Nova Integrated Systems will present the latest home communication systems for entertainment, security, and climate control. Mike will provide an assessment of the architect’s role in the process of designing and specifying such systems. He will also offer a glimpse into the future of home communication systems and how today’s home designer can prepare for tomorrow’s technology. What options will your clients be considering? Explore the practice of urban design by visiting with Hoerr-Schaudt Landscape Architects . Hoerr-Schaudt will present their firm’s work and approach to practice, including their position to engage urban design through landscape architecture and collaborations with architects and planners. Hoerr-Schaudt is a Chicago practice recognized nationally for the design of public, institutional and commercial spaces. Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin named Peter Schaudt one of two “Chicagoans of the Year in Design” for 2010. Limited to 30 participants. The first annual Rethinking Home Competition was held in early 2010, co-sponsored by the American institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and the Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments (SAGE) Federation. The competition focused on exploring new/changing models in long-term care environments, specifically skilled nursing facilities: the renovation of and/or addition to an existing nursing home in order to break from the model of a staff-centric operating philosophy to a resident-directed care model. Heidi Dahle, Assoc. AIA (Worn Jerabek Architects), who co-chairs this KC and was part of the winning team, will discuss her entry and several others and the jury comments. One of the biggest challenges for architects working with historic buildings or in historic districts is integrating new design to obtain approvals from historic review boards. Should new work blend, contrast, complement, or be subservient to the existing historic fabric? In his studies as the 2009 Francis J. Plym Traveling Fellow, Douglas Gilbert, AIA ( Douglas E. Gilbert Architect ),documented the significant differences between European and American approaches to contextual design. Using examples such as the Acropolis, British Museum, Reichstag, and some wild additions in Tallinn, Estonia, Doug will show how Europeans typically design alterations and additions in a distinct, contemporary manner. Bring your lunch; beverages provided. An innovative partnership has been created between the City of Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, School of Architecture and Urban Planning in recent years. Robert Greenstreet, PhD, RIBA, Intl. Assoc. AIA, is dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee . From 2004 to 2009, he was director of Planning and Design for Milwaukee; he now has the title of chair of City Development, UWM/City of Milwaukee. Hear how this relationship between an architecture school and its municipality works to the benefit of both. Bring your lunch; beverages provided. Come explore the Sound Specialists, Inc. showroom, an industry leader in whole-home automation. The showroom offers an engaging, three-dimensional illustration of the ways in which technology can be seamlessly incorporated into any residential design. By utilizing keypads, touch-screen wall panels, remote devices, iPhones, and iPads, explore a range of systems, including multi-room automation, video distribution, lighting, shading, climate control, security, and voice data networks. Stay after the tour for a reception hosted by Sound Specialists. Register at our Meetup page . 90.1-2010 Energy Standard for Buildings is the most significant revision to the ANSI/ASHRAE/IES energy standard since its inception. Buildings that comply with the 2010 edition will use approximately 25% less energy than the same buildings built to the 2004 standard. Jeff Boldt, PE (KJWW Engineers) will teach you why 90.1-2010 is important to your projects, how it is enforced, what the major revisions are, when you are likely to feel its impact, why it conserves more energy than other energy codes, and how to comply without breaking the budget. 90.1-2010 includes significant revisions to the building envelope, mechanical, and lighting requirements that will affect architects, engineers, contractors, and building owners. Have you ever wondered if LEDs are the most appropriate source for a particular application? LEDs hold great promise and are being heavily marketed. However, there are more light source options today than ever before, and when sustainability issues are paramount, the decision-making process can be daunting. Jim Baney, IALD, LC ( Schuler Shook ) will strip away the hype and show us what factors to consider throughout a project to ensure a successful, responsible lighting design. Bring your lunch or buy a cafeteria ticket in the first-floor shop. Kermin Chok, PE, SE, will discuss Halvorson's recent projects and work processes, including research into “structural engineering at the velocity of architecture.” How do structural engineers see their role as part of an integrated interdisciplinary design team? Kermin will explain how new computational/parametric design tools and structural analysis methods allow Halvorson to better engage and collaborate within the ever-changing “design space.” Limited to 25 participants. When was the last time you took a good hard look at how well you communicate in professional scenarios, particularly in terms of public speaking? Ask yourself: am I a conduit to motivate people towards a decision? What feedback have I received regarding my presentation abilities? Am I reasonably relaxed and confident when speaking to an audience---of two, of ten, of one hundred? Do I feel understood; do people understand and respond to my messages? Why not begin the new year with a revamp of your oral speaking abilities? Anne Scarlett ( Scarlett Consulting ) will offer tips and techniques for preparing concise, quality presentations; structuring content to best underscore your messages; and delivering with energy and charisma that will ensure an audience connection. For this 90-minute session, we will focus primarily on impromptu pitches and encounters; preparing meaningful yet concise presentations using the PechaKucha model, and confidence builders. Be prepared to actively participate in a few hands-on exercises. This month, we are at Matilda in Lakeview. Same drill: bring your business cards, a good joke to break the ice, and be ready to meet some interesting people. Specials include $1 tacos and $3 Tecate beer. Visit our Meetup page to let us know to expect you. Rick Harnish, executive director of the Midwest Hi-Speed Rail Association , discusses current developments, potential opportunities for architects and planners, and the overall benefits for establishing high-speed rail transportation for our Midwest region. Case studies of established high-speed rail networks will also be presented for comparison. Bring your lunch; beverages provided. Are former industrial sites problems or assets? Looking at them as historic resources offers an answer. Nicholas Kalogeresis, AICP ( The Lakota Group, Inc.) will discuss how adaptive re-use ordinances, zoning mechanisms, and financial tools are keys to preserving and re-purposing these structures. He will discuss case studies of projects in Los Angeles, Denver, and other cities and their applicability to the Chicago scene. Bring your lunch; beverages provided. What are the requirements for meeting the operations portion of the AIA 2030 Commitment? Bill Sturm, AIA, is our host and will participate in a conversation with principal from three small, medium, and large firms who will explain how they made their firm's practices more sustainable. What strategies and checklists can you use to work more sustainably? Limited to 35 participants.
