And, you want it to be more efficient and eco-friendly than the old one. Now is the time to get a call into your bathroom-remodeling contractor and let him help you with the new design. Flooring Let's work from the bottom up and start with the flooring for your new bathroom. The logical green choice is either natural stone or porcelain tile. Unlike vinyl flooring or carpeting (a poor choice for bathrooms) stone and tile are natural products and can be recycled. They are easy to maintain and will probably outlast the home if properly installed. If you go with natural stone the choices are somewhat limited compared to tile. The colors are usually earth tones and the patterns were shaped by nature. There will be some variation in the grain/pattern and colors, especially if the stone tiles were cut from more than a single stone. Depending on the type of stone you choose you will need to treat it occasionally with a sealer. Stone can be discolored by stains if not properly sealed. Porcelain tile is manufactured from clay and is mixed with adhesive agents and baked to create the tile. The clay mixture can be tinted to provide the desired and color and the pattern is set by a mold. Don't confuse ceramic tile with porcelain tile. They are both manufactured however, ceramic tile is only colored on the surface and then covered with a hard glaze. The actual tile is white under the color covering. You can tell this by looking at the back of a tile. Porcelain is colored throughout and if chipped is likely to show the defect. Plumbing Fixtures By federal regulation all plumbing fixtures must incorporate water saving features. Some toilet designs for low-volume water flushing are more efficient. The larger the hole between the water tank and the bowl the faster the volume can flow when released. This makes for less clogging and multiple flushes. Cabinets resources. If you go with a pedestal type sink make certain the sink and pedestal are both made of porcelain so they can be recycled. Some plastics maybe recyclable but not all. So it is a safe bet with porcelain. Lighting Go with all energy saving fixtures and bulbs. There are styles to fit every dcor and can reduce your electrical usage by as much as fifty percent. Walls If you have the walls painted use an egg-shell or semi-gloss latex based paint with low or no volatile organic compounds. The other choice of course to use stone or tile which will last for years without any major maintenance. Bathroom remodeling involves handling plumbing, electrical and perhaps structural elements that may require the experience and skills of a professional bathroom remodeling contractor. Before you find out you're in over your head, call a local bathroom remodeler and get an estimate for the project. It doesn't cost a penny to get an estimate and you may be surprised how affordable the remodel can be.
