Mark Walter Evans, a native son of the Golden West, was conceived in Berkeley, and born in Oakland in 1949, the Centennial of the Gold Rush. ::
Despite significant natural abilities - and in spite of being the great white hope of his Jewish grandmother - he spent the better half of his late teens and twenties just wandering around. His excuse for this indigence is that he was “gathering wool.”
After a stint at an ultimately doomed marriage in Mendocino, he returned to serious malingering around Berkeley in the early ‘eighties, until he embarked for Europe at the end of the summer of ’83. He proudly brags about the pilgrimage he made, on foot and thumbing it, from Galway, the westernmost parish in Europe, to Jerusalem and back.
Needless to say, when the Subject was in the Holy Land, he claims that he “gathered wool” there, also.
Returning to California, he set out to become a “back-to-the-lander,” and settle down on his inheritance – fifteen acres of near wilderness at the head of Los Alamos Canyone del Norte, in the Mayacama Range, in eastern Sonoma County. There he did a long somnolent stint as a sort of modern day Rip van Winkle look-alike.
Finally, awakening at the tender age of sixty-nine, he now states he ”ain’t wasting time no more” and has set his face to produce an “Internet Baroque Jukebox / Streaming Channel” – With a little help from his friends, of course.
