Third Saturday Coffeehouse
Join us for the 3rd Saturday Coffeehouse held in Unity House on the 3rd Saturday of each month, September through June inclusive (we take off July & August). The schedule for the evening is as follows: doors open 7:30; open mic at 8; featured performer right around 9.
The purpose of the 3rd Saturday Coffeehouse is to inspire creativity and the expression thereof in an environment that is supportive and encouraging. Since the first coffeehouse in March, 2004, hundreds of people have shared their creativity at the open mic, and featured artists have ranged from relatively unknown local performers to those who are known nationally and internationally such as Robert Bly, Honeyboy Edwards, Maria Mazziotti Gillan and Haki Madhubuti. The 3rd Saturday Coffeehouse is a congregation event that is open to the public, and on a typical evening the audience will include congregation members as well as non-congregation members who learned of the event from our publicity or from friends.
The open mic welcomes all genres of performance such as poetry, fiction, story telling, drama, magic, music and comedy. Open mic performers are limited to 5 minutes. Featured performers also represent all genres of performance. The 3rd Saturday Coffeehouse happens because of the hard work of the Ambience Committee that arrives early to set up refreshments (which they bake and contribute), collect donations at the door, light candles and generally see that the things run smoothly and that the room is attractive and appealing. Charlie Rossiter serves as coordinator, booking the features and serving as MC. A donation of $3-5 is collected at the door and used to compensate the featured performers. Refreshments are available throughout the evening.
The 3rd Saturday Coffeehouse provides an excellent opportunity to informally meet people while enjoying an inexpensive and entertaining night out. There’s no pressure to perform. Many attend in order to be a part of an appreciative audience experiencing the performances of others.
For more information come to a Coffeehouse and check it out.
